How to Support Other Foster Families

May is Foster Care Awareness Month and you may have no idea what to do. Others may not either and that is OK. We want to give you practical ways to help other foster families as well as give others ideas of what you can do for them. Below is an extensive, but not exhaustive list. Feel free to comment others you have below.

  • Cook a meal for the family

  • Ask what they currently need (diapers, formula, toys, clothes, etc.)

  • If you are close, watch their kids so they can have a date night

  • Buy them a gift card for anything they might need

  • Run errands for the family (because they are probably exhausted)

  • Have play dates with your kids

  • Clean their house for them

  • Do their yard work/landscaping for a little while until they are settled

  • Pay for a haircut, summer camp, or class

  • Provide transportation

  • Remember foster families bio kids as well (sometimes they feel left out)

If you are the foster family, never be afraid to ask for help. It doesn't make you weak or a loser. It's needed. Take it from a guy who never asks for help. You burn out quick and it's not fun.

Make this May and beyond count. Help a foster family out.

Have a great rest of the week!
